DM_Deathstar


DM_Deathstar is the first map I made for the source engine. When I first started, I used my Jedi Academy methods of mapping by relying heavily on brushes (the building blocks of maps in the Quake 3 Arena engine). This form of mapping I discovered was inefficient for the source engine, which requires a mix of brushes AND models for quicker compile times.
Because of this, I learned XSI and started constructing map props for the level to replace the more complicated brushwork. I further increased my compile time by using decal textures for the many panels on the walls instead of individual brushes with a texture applied. I was able to reduce my compile time from six hours to 23 minutes. Eike Legion made most of the textures which appear in his excellent Jedi Academy single player series; Imperial Outpost.
The level features several areas that are a mix of what was seen in Episode 4: A New Hope and Episode 6: Return of the Jedi. Among these areas are:
  • The Emperor's Throne Room
  • Tie Fighter Hangar Bay
  • Tractor Beam room
  • Storage hall
  • Various hallways and control rooms
The map will be included in The New Era mod.
